DCoC/JA eyes renewed engagement with Egypt after Regional Office launch
Signatory States of the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct have welcomed the International Maritime Organization’s move to warmly welcome a Regional Presence Office in Alexandria, Egypt, to serve the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The DCoC/JA Chair, Mr. Metse Ralephenya (Republic of South Africa) welcomed the move on behalf of regional states citing that they were working towards uniting all regions in future in the fight against all crimes meted out on ships.
“This is an excellent opportunity to renew and deepen Egypt’s engagement with the DCoC/JA framework, reaffirming our collective goals of combating piracy, human trafficking, IUU Fishing and other maritime threats while fostering safer seas for global trade and regional prosperity.”
The establishment of the MENA regional office highlights the IMO’s continued support towards strengthening maritime governance and capacity-building efforts in this key and dynamic part of the world.
Egypt, as a signatory to the pre-amended Djibouti Code of Conduct, plays a significant role in global shipping with 12% of world maritime trade and over USD $1 trillion worth of goods per annum, traversing through its sea-level waterway – the Suez Canal. The Suez connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and provides the shortest maritime route between Europe and Asia.
Regional States look forward to working closely with the IMO’s new regional office and our Egyptian counterparts to further strengthen collaboration, enhance capacity-building initiatives, and support the shared vision of ensuring maritime security and sustainability across the region.
